Should the government stop giving extra unemployment benefits to get people back to work?
Today, the US Government released the jobs report for April 2021.The Labor Department’s April jobs report was a big disappointment, showing payrolls rose by only 266,000. Analysts expected a monster number closer to 1 million. The report also showed an increase rather than the expected decrease in the unemployment rate for April. Analysts thought we’d see a new pandemic-era low. Many people are receiving unemployment benefits that pay more than a full time job would be. Some other people can not go back to work and pay chid care at the same time and make enough money to live on. The cost of buying everyday products is rising fast.
I just read this interesting article from Yahoo Finance on this issue. Here is the link: US Chamber of Commerce calls for ending extra unemployment benefits after disappointing jobs report (aol.com)
I practice Social Security Disability Law. My attorney fee is governed by the Social Security Administration. When you sign a fee agreement with a Social Security disability lawyer, the fee is limited to 25% of the past-due benefits you are awarded, up to a maximum of $6,000. The attorney fee has not been raised in atleast 10 years. The attorney fee is not keeping up with inflation. Those who get social security disability get COLA increases usually once per year. The attorney fees paid to lawyers for the work they do is not enough to keep up with inflation. The Social Security Administration should adjust the attorney fees to keep with inflation and raise it each year to keep up with inflation.
More and more social security claimant's do not have lawyers representing them in their hearing because there are not enough attorneys practicing in this area. Also, if you want competent attorneys representing claimants who need help than something needs to change. The Social Security Administation needs to raise the fee cap.
What do you think will get people back to work? Are you staying on unemployment because you can not afford to goto work? Do you earn more on unemployment that you do working?
